How about an article or a report on your dog .I'm considering a GSP and want to know how yours is doing.

1 Does it work close or far out.
2 Will it point rabbits
3 Will the rabbits hold for flushing
4 How was training
5 Recommended books
6 E collar or no
7 Worth the hassel
8 male/female
9 Any o0ther tips

I'm interested in the answers to those questions as well. I need to get a dog myself and am trying to decide which bloodline to get.

My GSP is not a gun dog nor is it trained to point (other than what he does on instinct) When he is in the field, he minds the birds well and tends to follow them more than me. He works in close(less than 20 yards) as I don't want him flushing bunnies 1/4 mile away. I DID use a sport dog brand E-collar as it helped in initial training to let him know it is not OK to run up to the birds on a kill. I just turn him loose in the field and he stays close by zig zagging back and forth in the brush. I must say that he is VERY easily trained and a very gentle dog overall. He is just now 1 year and a few months old, so he still has a bit of puppy bounce to him when he is excited, but once in the field, it's all buisness.
GSP"s are clingy dogs....They want to be near their master all the time......If I go to the bathroom, he will sit outside the door and whine until I open the door....I Kennel train all of my dogs as it makes it MUCH easier to deal with them if company comes over...etc...All of the GSP's I have seen like to be under something when relaxing such as the couch, table, chair etc....not sure if that is common, but all the ones I have seen do it.
Like all puppies, they do chew......especially nice shoes!....not the cheap ones from Wal-mart!!!
Overall, I will say it is the best dog I have ever owned all around. I did not buy any books, but I did research them online a bit.
As for pointing ability, When he was three months old, he would lock up on anything that moved in front of him...ie: flies, grasshoppers, quail, the cat etc......looked like nice points too....so they can be trained to point and hold on just about anything I imagine.
