I finaly got up to the cage and behold!!! A big snake. I think I put about 15 shots into him. No offense, but you have to expect predators, especially living in the country! You need to build your cages to be more predator proof instead of just killing an animal that is doing what nature intended. You provided an easy meal for that snake by putting prey in a cage and leaving access for the snake...and that is YOUR fault, not the snakes. I hope you do a better job predator-proofing your mews!!! 1.) I don't live in the country. If you look to the left there it says the town were I live.... 2.) Don't even use that nature crap on me, because I was doing the same thing. Nature intended humans to kill too, maybe you don't have canine teeth idk, I've just evolved to use guns and deep freezers. 3.) It is my fault I never denied, I don't deny I shot the snake either. I didn't shoot him just because he was snake. My sponsor has commented that snakes make a great hawk meal.

Yeah...Pilot Point is a real metropolis!!! You don't live in a big city. I have been to Pilot Point and it is the country!!! So you should know that you are gonna have snakes, raccoons, possums, coyotes, etc. that you have to protect your animals from. (Unfortunately more and more people who live in the big city are having to deal with these predators, too.) I live in the country and have had wild animals kill my pets, but I did not go after them like a vigilante!!! They were only trying to live.
And, yes, you were made to hunt...FOR FOOD. Not cause you screwed up by not making your cages more predator-proof. That snake was looking for food and you provided it on a silver platter. You did not kill the snake cause it makes good hawk food...you BRAGGED about shooting the snake 15 times because it killed 5 of your quail. And, by the way, you should not feed that snake to your bird after pumping it full of lead.
Relocating the snake would have been very easy to do...that snake was small and could have easily been scooped up in a box or something and taken down the road and released. It had already done it's damage.
And another point brought up by Wilded...it was NOT legal for you to shoot that snake since you do live inside the town..it IS ILLEGAL to discharge a firearm in city limits. Just in case you didn't already know that.

Okay people, back off. He did what he thought was right. He can learn from this with some constructive criticism, not beating him over the head with it.

If I was going to bring you a hot snake I'd bring you one of these canebreaks, the 3 footers are a wonderful salmon and copper color. Just restrict his food intake and he'll take years and years to reach full size.

OK folks, I think this thread has run it's course. Starting to get too heated. Each has his or her opinions and they have been stated....over and over.....so I think we can all agree to disagree....Right?

On the 4th of July I pulled 6+ ft black rat snake from my chicken coop. It had consumed 3 eggs. I could not believe its skull could fit through the chicken wire. It was quite large enough to kill the chickens and the rooster. I had to crawl in the coop on my belly only inches away from the snake. I extracted it and thought if it found its way in there once it would do so again. I chose to decapitate it. I do not dislike snakes. I do not kill things wantonly. This species is very abundant here. In fact I have 2 skins that were shed in my outdoor shed of the same species. The hawk got some fresh snake the vultures got the rest. I also kill mice that enter my home. I will place more chicken wire on top of the wire already there to prevent another from getting in. It was unfortunate but not unreasonable. The bird attacks every snake she encounters. I do not. I do not advocate rattlesnake roundups, or any killing that wastes life. My yard backs up to 520 acres of forest I live in harmony with my animal neighbors no poisons no pesticides no gun hunting for sport. I admonish Krys for the shooting comment that was banal. I always stop to help turtles crossing the road. I do swerve to hit squirrels but I then stop to recover them and clean and freeze or feed while warm. I have even rescued an abandoned iguana and spent money on a proper habitat for it until I located a herp keeper that would take it. I am a big predator I do not waste what I kill and help when I can. I am a good steward and care for the planet that supports us. In the big picture the death of these snakes is a small thing. Stuff happens, I will do my part to keep it from happening again if does reoccur I would probably do the same thing again. Careful you don't want to sound too much like a bunny hugger!.... ;D Yarak

I don't know if I'm too late in bringing this up, but, last spring as we we're pulling up the flooring in an old shed in Krys's back yard to build a new mews we found a large 3.5 - 4 foot rat snake. This is in Saginaw, not out in the boonies. Krys has a breeder pair of bluefronted amazons within just four or five feet from where the snake was, and they were in the middle of laying eggs right then. For those who don't know, these birds sell for upwards of $700 each. Krys bagged the snake and relocated it later on. If it were venomous, I could see why someone wouldn't want to just pick it up and bag it for relocation. And we do have more than enough ratsnakes around. I guess it depends on how YOU value the particular animal at that moment. Dustin was mad. But I think if Krys had caught the snake in the act of killing his birds or eating their eggs, I have a feeling he still would have just relocated it. That snake was surviving, we hunt as a sport now, most humans these days just act out their predatory impulses by fighting over who gets the best looking steak at the grocery store. I'm probably just rambling, I'll stop now. Minca
