My personal feelings on keeping a bird go along with the statement Weasel made. Even though we become attached, they do not, unless possibly they are eyass. One nice thing I have learned about keeping a bird for the second and third year is this, in the second and also third year you start to see a realalistic hunting partnership not dependent on starving the bird to get it to perform and come to the glove. My bird in her second year has done great at a higher weight in cold weather and will do better next year as well. I can touch her, scratch her head, and she will nibble on my finger, and perform well in the field, but she is still natures girl so I can't forget that. Once I had a dog that hate me, no matter how well I treated him he still tried to bit me every chance he got, wish I could of hacked him back to wolves.
