The redtail hawk is one of the most well known raptors in north america. They are in the buteo genus and are often seen sitting on exsposed perches or soaring high above. The redtail hunts mostly by sitting high on a perch and scanning the ground untill some prey iteam is spotted then it simply dives off its perch to capture it. This is not the only style of hunting used just the most common. Redtails hunt a very wide range of prey cottontails, jack rabbits, squirrels, mice, rats, and lots lots more. They make great falconry birds due to their hardiness in captivity and their forgiving nature. They are one of the three choices available to the apprentice and the most popular. There are lots of ways to hunt with them soar hawking, flying from the fist, following from a high perch, and slope soaring. A well trained rt is hard to beat as a falconry bird and they a very good hunting partner and if trained well will put alot of game in your bag.

Around Stephenville, TX I see mostly the Easterns, Kriders and a few Harlans. Most falconers I know trap Easterns and one mentioned that the Harlans have no hunting drive. Can anyone agree or disagree with this? Also I know nothing about if there's a difference between the Kriders and those Easterns. Does anyone have any advice or have hunted a Kriders?
