I know a breeder that has an anatum peregrin/merlin clutch hatching this summer. I'm really thinking about taking one. Has anyone flown a perlin? Are they as killer as I hear? I'll be hunting starling and dove with it.

I flew a peale's merlin a while back and they are very dynamic birds. They are not the best looking birds but they sure do fly. For small birds up to pigeon size as well as small ducks they are great. Mine waited on about 100 feet and took lots of birds. I think with kite training they would go up just like any other falcon.

A friend of mine in the UK had a male until recently. It would wait on very well at around 300ft and was red hot at snipe. The mature peregrinus x european merlin males have the most stunning colouration I have ever seen, they are living jewels. I think they will always be something of a rarity for two reasons 1 they are not worth a lot, and 2 most peregrine semen donors have stopped producing by the time the merlins lay. I have never even see a Merger.
