I am in the research/planning stage and am not planning to get a bird until over a year from now. Here's a basic question: is it more common among hawkers to take a bird from the wild, or to purchase a captive-bred bird? Thanks.

Well, This is different for falconers in the US as we are required to trap our first bird from the wild by federal law. Depending where in Canada you are, you can trap or buy I believe. As for which one is better.......All depends on what you want to do with it. For a first bird, I would honestly reccomend a wild caught bird. This way if anything happens to make you not want to practice falconry anymore, then all you have to do is fatten the bird up and release it back to the wild. A captive bred bird on the other hand, cannot be released into the wild without a LOT of work and in many cases, it can't happen at all. Cheers, Weasel

Heck in the States you can get them for less than $400.00. You also HAVE to buy though don't you?

Yes, VERY few permits have been issued to trap birds in the UK in the last few decades from what I have heard.
