Awesome Noel, I have been seeeing the Coops flying around a bit as well, they should start nesting pretty soon up here in Maine, might have started allready actually. I have been keeping tabs on 5 pairs of kestrels as well. #using my boxes one that may use a box and one pair in the flicker hole that fledged 5 young last year.
By the way, How do the various raptors react to you watching them. A Red shouldered pair i used to watch would circle over me while a broadwinged used to glare at me. Those are my only nest experiences so far. Kestrels are just so much easier to obsere, haha. Oh, saw a huge mature Bald Eagle today, definatly a female.

Well, the coops are real nervous birds so I keep my distance and use my binocs to check on them, but even then I won't go back for about two weeks so not to disturb them. while the eggs are brooding. She just glares at me from atop the nest with just the top of her head visable.

Very right Weasel!, The sponser and I are going to wait a little longer before we head out to look for nest. I wanted to start scoping out areas for next year. Plus, I just frigging need to do something to get me through the off season.

I've got a pair of coops that has nested in a little stand of trees in the center of a campus of office buildings where I work for the last 3 years. In the evenings last year, I would walk along one of the walking paths to my car and they would fly down to their favorite roost and I could walk up to within 15-20 feet of them. They were so calm around people that my sponsor thought that their offspring would probably be already manned to a great extent. So, when the trapping season came around, we walked 15 feet into the woods, saw what looked like a juvenile hen about 20 right above us, we dropped the trap directly below her and stepped back about 30 feet. She promptly dove out of the tree onto the trap where she got caught. My sponsor said she was one of the biggest eastern coops hens that he had ever seen. We ended up letting her go because even though she was in juvenile feathers, she had just the nub of one adult tail feather coming in. My sponsor said that it could be a late-molting second year bird, or an early first molt passage bird. He said we couldn't take the chance and we let "Metro" go. I hadn't seen the pair this year and thought we had scared them away, that is until yesterday. I spotted a new nest in the stand of trees and saw the ubiquitous squared off tail poking over the end. Now if they'll just stay there for a couple more years until I turn general class... ;D

Gonna go check on my coops again today to see if they have hatched or not. I an kinda nervous as we had a tornado pass throught that area the other day and even though it didn't touch down, it had some nasty winds here.

Well, the coops babies have been hatched for a little over two weeks now and I have been keeping tabs on theor progress. With all the sparrows I have been trapping, I decided to go toss a few hobbled ones out near the nest site and watch to see if the parents would come in for the free meal.......So far they would not come to the sparrows while I stood in the area. Here are a few bad pictures I took with my camcorder the other day. Cheers, Weasel Momma screaming at me again....Momma screaming at me See the white fluffy thing? There is the white fluffy thing again
