I took my 15 year-old daughter deer hunting for the youth season in Texas yesterday. She is holding out for an 8 point and the largest she saw was a 6 so she will have to hunt some more. I placed her and her mother in the best blind and drove the truck to the other end of the 109 acres we hunt so I could watch the world wake up as the sun came over the horizon. What a unique morning as I was not hunting just watching. First to come by were some small wrens and then some mocking birds. I saw 2 small fox squirrels about half grown playing in the trees. I heard the call of a red shoulder hawk and then saw a red tailed hawk flying later. While sitting there I picked up the binoculars and was watching a field a over the fence on the place next to us when a doe ran across the field. Out of the brush came a really nice 8 point buck following her scent. It seems the girls always get us in trouble. As it warmed up a scrub jay lit in the tree next to me all of the sudden he took off like he was shot and across the clearing flew a haggard cooper's female. He barely got away. After a morning of wildlife watching I went to pick the girls up to drive to town to meet some friends for a burger at the local drive-in. On the way to town we saw two red-tails, a merlin and about 10 kestrels. No deer killed but a great day anyway.
