You guys crack me up, I saw 'em all the time up in the Seattle area, so it's no novel thing to me. The wildlife center I volunteered at usually had a couple in at all times for one thing or another. When I volunteered at the the zoo, a wild pair were nesting within zoo grounds, right over the elk yard. We set up a scope so visitors could get a close look at the eyases in the nest. When we did the free flight raptor program, the gyr loved to fly over to the nest and harass them a bit before continuing with her routine. The zoo was HER territory and those eagles were NOT allowed!! It's my opinion that alot of people just don't pay enough attention. I realize there are parts of the country that don't see baldy's very often, but I when I lived up in Seattle I could be driving along and see one flying overhead at least once a week, and I would think about all the other people on the road that never looked up to see it. When I got involved in wildlife rehab and falconry it really openned my eyes and I started seeing things that I never noticed before.

Yeah Yeah I know they aren't necessarily rare anymore. I used to see a lot of baldies up by snoqualmie too, it doesn't make them any less impressive.

Just saw my first wild Bald Eagles last weekend. It's pretty awesome to see them hunting and flying free instead of just sitting at a zoo. A real highlight in my life!

You're one up on me as you were able to identify yours immediately :-) I saw one and couldn't figure out what it was. The bird appeared to be all black with a feathered head and way too large to be a hawk. It was eating a freshly killed cottontail rabbit - road kill. It allowed me to get within 30' of it which gave me a wee bit of a thrill. I had to ask 2 experienced falconers to figure it out for me. Mike was able to ID it as an immature bald eagle. Location: Shadow Creek Ranch, Pearland, Texas. Date: last week of February, 2011.
