I've had some really good training sessions this past 4 weeks. It all started last year when I found some San Juan stock rabbits. Well I bred the buggers and have been sending some to Francie for her babies and I kept a few females for stock, then kept 8 bucks for training.
I started training the rabbits first about 8 weeks ago, I'd turn two lose for a week, Chance and I would chase them around with sticks so they could find their legs. Then we started training the JRT Jeffery Pup, he didn't like to catch the rabbits just chase them. When they were getting really strong we would throw Beatrice in the mix and try to catch the rabbit just before Bea would clamp down and end the chase. So each of these 8 bucks has been in and out of the cage and really getting the speed on, learning a few tricks too ...
I started bringing Adahi into the frey last week ( Adhai is my 1xintermewd PMRT ) we had some great chases where the rabbits got away until the dogs penned them in a corner or trapped them under some of the concrete hidy-holes I made. Adahi did make two catches that I was able to trade him off and save the rabbit for another time ( I'm letting them have three weeks off if they get caught to heal ).
Tonight was our first fatality, after a 20 min chase, three misses by Ahadi, the rabbit ran down the middle of the fence row several times and Adahi just couldn't get a hold on it. Adahi finally figured out the rabbits trick and hit him so hard through the fence row that it knocked a whole right through the bramble, when I got to them the rabbit was bleeding dark purple blood were Adahi's right hullux went into its jugular, I dispatched the rabbit, flipped it over and opened the chest for Adahi, let the dogs come over and sniff around (which turned out really nice), the afternoon sun was sinking and it was cooling down real nice like.
It felt good to just sit there with the bird eating and the two dogs being doggy and everyone being nice to each other (well except from the rabbits point of view I guess) ......
