I'm not permitted in the trapping section yet so I posted this question here. Can anyone tell me the trapping seasons for any states bordering Texas? I'm trying to come up with a back up plan in case my permits arrive after TX trapping season ends. If anyone knows of a state with decent out of state trapping costs that has a season longer than TX plz let me know.
Thanks in advance, Dustin McCoy

Oklahoma and Arkansas have longer dates. I don't know about La., but I am sure someone here does. Yarak

Has anyone ever gone through the process to trap in OK and is it worth the effort?

Dustin, I am not sure what hi name is, check with weasel or frootdog. I met a guy at the holloween meet that was going to go trapping in Kansas and was going to skip Oklahoma. From what I understood it had something to do with the cost. That is to bad, cuz I know an area of Ok. that has a lot of red tails.

Arkansas goes from Sept 1- Jan 31st ,Fri-Mon. It requires only a non-resident hunting license which can be purchased for $54 or there abouts. Oklahoma requires a non-resident hunting license as well as a non-res falconry permit. The falconry permit must be applied for and can only be purchased in a 3 yr increment. It is $100 or more and Im not sure how much the hunting license is. Kansas Parks and Wildlife are very helpful and will mail you an non res trapping permit app the day you request it. it is valid with a non-resident hunting license that cost $65-70. Louisiana season runs through the end of Feb. Good luck getting help. The fellow in charge of the permits knows nothing about it , is not very willing to help, and will not hesitate to tell you that he has had those duties dumped on him and that he doesnt want any part of it. Go to Arkansas if you need to and I will be glad to help you or hook you up with somebody that can.

I'm not trying to hi-jack your thread, just add to the discussion. But, does anyone know which state's trapping season runs the longest? I'm just now beginning the process of becoming an apprentice and I'm afraid I won't have the time to trap a bird. Anyone mind PM'ing me with an idea of how long it will take to test/get a sponsor/acrquire the equipment? Thanks

So I'll probably have to wait until next trapping season to get a bird? No other options?

Longbow Thats not really true ! It depends on where you are at ? If you have your mews and equipment ready , you can take the test on Saturday , get inspected and sponsor papers signed by the next Saturday . If there no hang-ups , you 'll receive your permits in 2 to 4 weeks from the time you send them in . That depends on the processing time and work load of the issuing offices . AG&F takes about a week and a half and the Federal ( Atlanta ) office is very helpful ! If all goes well , you will have your permits back in less then a month . (note) They have a 90 day prossesing time but I have never had any one complain of having to wait that long for they permits .
Arkansas has the longest of any state , that is that I am aware of at this time , due to the weekly brake up ( Friday - Monday ) . This gives us the same number of days as the other states but allows us more months ;D
If you decide to trap in Arkansas there many AHA members that are willing to assist a fellow falconer , if you wish . You can contact Grodus or myself and we can help or hook you up with some one nearest you .

Thanks :)Wilded F O R G I V E M E ! Longbow shows he is from Texas but Thunder does not show and did not say were they are from and ask which ( states ) for trapping and how l-o-n-g it takes for equiping and permits . They could be in New York for all I know ! ? ;D
Up-date Correction : I just found a post by Thunder indicating he is from Kentucky which I don't think is in Texas That would put them in the Atlanta Ga. Office and not Albuquerque NM. But the time span would still depend on how long the state takes !!

No problem, it has just been very frustrated for those in Texas that had to wait many months and in some cases a whole season before they could start the apprentice program. We are required to have a sponsor, build our mews and have all our equipment before we can even take the exam.

We are required to have a sponsor, build our mews and have all our equipment before we can even take the exam. Wilded Wish there was something we could do to help speed things up But for the above quote , I think that is a good thing ! It shows there is a devotion already in progress and every Master knows there is much devotion required in falconry . That is something not every one has !
