To hack a hawk is to release it with the intent to catch it up again, your releasing the hawk but trying to keep it around by feeding it on a hacking board, a board set up with food for the lose hawk to come back and eat. The hawk flies around at will and builds good strong musscles, thus when you catch the hawk after several months it is very strong because it was "hacked".

But how is the hawk hacked before being taken up. If the hacking is done by the falconer....how does a wild hawk do it?

Hacking is only a term utalized for falconry. It is when you take a young captive bred bird and basicly release it into the wild to learn flight skills and hunting skill all while the bird has a safe haven to come back to for food. Once the falconer desides the bird has done enough time in the wild (could be weeks), he traps it and them trains it for falconry. In effect, it is much like trapping a wild bird in this way.

But how is the hawk hacked before being taken up. If the hacking is done by the falconer....how does a wild hawk do it? The hacking is done by the Falconer only in that he turns the hawk/falcon loose. The time the bird spends away in the wild is the actual hacking period. To be hacked means to be turned lose then caught back. Michael Beran

Hacking simply means to allow the bird to came and go as it pleases. Most often reffering to a captive raised bird, but can also be used for the permenant release of rehab birds or captive raised birds. The P-fund hacked all the baby peregrines released in the US. Simply the bird is taken before hard penning and placed in a hack box at the release site for a few days, then the box is opened to allow the birds to leave. They now see this as their nest site/home base and will return as needed for food. When the birds stop coming back for food it means they are successful hunters and no longer need to be fed or they have died somehow.

There are basically three types of birds used for falconry: the Longwing (falcons), the Shortwing (Goshawks and Sparrowhawks), and Broadwings or Buzzards. Technically, Austringers are the people who fly the Shortwings and Broadwings, although the processes and techniques are still refered to as Falconry.
What book is it you are trying to translate?
