ALERT ! ! STOLEN GOSHAWK
% Missouri Falconers Association
Folks,
If someone requests a band replacement for a lost band on an immature goshawk in the near future, please have an officer deliver it to them and have a look at the bird.
Sometime in the couple of days, probably in the evening, before yesterday afternoon (March 2 – 4) someone stole one of my goshawks from my mews in Glenview, Illinois. I had the mews locked up, but I may have inadvertently left the key in the lock; the key was in the lock when I discovered the loss.
The bird is a big (31 oz.), first-year, brown male with its two outer tail feathers just molted. It also has a 1"x1" pieces of the fuzzy side of Velcro glued around the base of each of its two center tail feathers to accommodate a tail protector sheath. The sheath is made of blue x-ray film with a thin, flat piece of white plastic through the center and the bird had the sheath on the last time I saw it in the mews. It also had jess bracelets affixed with 1/4" brass grommets, 3" long, slitted jesses and a federal black band # R0117807. It's possible that someone just released the bird, so if you get a call on a goshawk flying around with a blue tail sheath, please let me know too.
My main concern is for the bird – trying to survive in the wild with a tail sheath. However, it should be able to pull the tail sheath off, which is one of the reason I use Velcro.
Please forward this e-mail to anyone you think would be helpful. I'm also networking with FWS, local law enforcement, raptor rehabbers, and the birding and falconry community.
Thank you very much,
