I'm sure that everyone is already aware of this, but in case some of you haven't heard, the cost of the federal falconry permit will increase from $25 to $100 as of May 11, 2005. Rehabilitation and propogation permit fees will also be affected. I'm not certain of the costs assiciated with those permits, but here's a link to the final rule that was published in the Federal Register: migratorybirds.fws.gov

It sucks for the people in states requiring yearly renewal. Hopefully the new fed regs will go through and the fed fee will be a moot point anyway, but until then I'm glad I'm NOT in one of those states.

You will as an apprentice just for the first year. I think this is only for the state though. Frootdog, did you have to do the feds or not?

I honestly have to wonder why the huge increase? I mean, it's hard enough to get into falconry. Some of us teens can't take an extra $75, we need it for food, gas and other stuff! We don't exactly get alot of money.

I'll check when I get hame, but I think I did. The thing that really sucks is that NOW my permit is good for 3 years, but I will be upgrading to general ASAP in light of potential changes that say you have to be General for 5 years B4 getting an apprentice. I got NAFA's official positions on the new regs, but they only adressed about 7 of the potential changes and did not give a stance on that one. Don't get me wrong I'm not just dying to have an app. , but I believe that if the rules change then I should be available as soon as possible because the number of potential sponsors will be greatly decreased at first.

Hey Weasel. I checked my old permits and the fed one always expires at the same time the state one does so yes I did have to pay the fed fee too.

That's just for the fed fee. For me and you this year it will be a whopping total of $220 state+fed fees. New hunting license forty something, THA dues about $40, NAFA dues about $40, Nafa field meet fees $45, Dirthawking - Priceless

Are the fed fees going to stop after they return to a more state run program in a few years? wes

Well I really feel sorry for all the people with high state permit fees. Florida at this point dosent charge a fee for state permits. My apprentice permit expires in 2006. Think the Feds are going to collect for this year? Or just charge the 100.00 when I renew/upgrade.
