My brother and I are talking about trading my .22 short/long/long rifle for his .410. He would be making a killing out of the deal since the .22 has a tube mag and was passed down from our great grandmother(but I also have the 25-35 which was also ggma's). Whereas the .410 is some sort of generic thing he got from a friend, I would guess around 15 years old. I'm not very knowlegable about gun hunting, but I am interested in trying my hand at it, and am wondering if anyone else here has hunted with a .410. I'm thinking things like grouse, smaller ducks and rabbits would be the most likely game for it. Any ideas?

If It was up to me, I would keep the .22. More bang for the buck per say. 410's are a fun little shot gun, but not very effective on many varieties of game. Plus the shells are way more expensive than a box "o" .22 shells

I had a .410/22 hornet over and under when I was growing up, great squirrel gun and good for rabbit hunting with dogs, but I don't think I would let go of a nice little .22 for a .410. Like Weasel said, shells are expensive for a .410 and you have a limited number of prey you can effectively take down with it.

I always thought it was big fun to shoot rabbits with, if the dogs brought them around fast I had the shotgun power I needed but if the rabbit was way out in front and taking it's time I could plink it with the .22. Wish I would have held on to that gun.!!

I plan to get 22 to hunt without my hawk from time to time just for a change.

Yea love my 10/22. Ive done so many things to it it dosnt even look like a ruger any more!! but a great little gun. but the only thing a 410 is good for is close rabbits and snakes. you prob couldnt bring down a duck or even a quail unless you were point blank.

Rugers 10/22 is great but if i had the money I would go for Thompson Centers Arms .22 Classic. All of their stuff is lifetime warranty , and they stand by that even if it changes owners. I was going to buy one as a friend had a relative that worked there. alas they are having a baby and not working there right now. anyway, i would keep the .22.

i am not into modifying and toys, Mr. Weasel, hehe. Thta eminds me of my friend Nick he has a .308 with Bull barrel, mossberg pistol grip 12 gauge, Bushmaster .223 with telescoping stock, Desert Eagle .50, a 9mm, a ruger 10/22 and the guy doesnt even hunt. Of course he has a banana clip on the ruger and is going to buy lots of crap for it. I geuss that is an option though when he still lives at home and doesnt pay rent or buy your own food. oh, i forgot the snowmobile and crotch rocket. Oh, and my complainging about his wasted money isn't jealousy at all, no no, even though if i were him i would have saved enough money to buy a home by now....erghghghghg

If you want a super small game rifle that shoots way farther than it should and beats .22 and .22 mag accuracy shoot one of the new 17hmr and 17mach2. ET

If it was me minca I would buy a 20 gauge shotgun my wife ownes one and loves it. That way when you get bored of small game you have a gun to take down large game too.

Ed, I agree with you about the 17 cal. A friend of mine bought one and we shot the heck out of it at the ranch....Putting it through the tests so to speak. We found out that it WILL penetrate 2" thick bulletproof glass. We have a sheet of it at the ranch that we test guns on for fun. A 9mm,.44,.45,.50 will not go through it. A .22 bounces off and deer rifles of all calibers will go through it. We where amazed that the little .17 would have that much velocity. It turns bunny into puree.
