I have only a 9x9x6 weathering area here in Florida. In Florida you only need one or the other. Since, I'm not planning on living in Florida the weathering area was best choice for me. I just don't want to spend big bucks on a mew and have to tear it down in a couple of years. Here is my weathering area before I graveled the bottom. I also put a large grass carpet over gravel and rubber pads down where he jumps. Oh... and yes the wire goes down under grass about a foot and 90degs out a foot.

Does your weathering area allow rain to get on the bird?

Not unless he wants to be in the rain. I put the bath pan out far enough from the roof to be in the rain. The perch is positioned under the roof to keep rain off. If he wants to sit in the rain then he can jump down to the bath pan.-Zach

Sorry it took so long had problems with camera. Anyways the weathering area is going to get some mods once I get another chamber up. I know I said earlier that I wasn't going to have a mew, but I changed my mind. I bought a shed that is extrud vinyl. It's pretty easy to set up and take down. Should be getting it in a couple of weeks. Then I'll do some modes like putting in bared windows. The weathering area is going to get another coat of paint. The roof is going to be replaced with a tin roof aswell as some shad cloth to keep bugs out.

I guest it depends on your definition of flight pen, I free loft year round and my mew and weathering area total about 24 feet long, I have shade cloth in areas, where bird might hit fencing, local falconer has one that is over 40 ft long and netted, local rehaber has one that is 100 ft long x 20 ft wide in an L shape, total covered with shade cloth from 4 feet up. bottom 4 ft is fiberglass sheets on cement footing. So yes some of us use a flight pen. wes

TReilly, your lucky, wish I had more room to build a larger weathering area ( flight area). Something to remember, concider what you may do in future, position of building, number of birds, species, etc. before you build your facilities. allow room to extend or mod. for the future. Good Luck Wes
