I'm participating in a research project about Harris Hawks, and recently got an e-mail from another person who also belongs to the project about the use of lures with Harris Hawks... I would like to know, how do you guys use the lure with your birds? Have you heard about lure flying HH? It sounds really strange to me... at least with the vision of "lure flying" I have... Any serious comments will be appreciated
Thanks

The only use i have for the lure is to either end the hunt by swinging it in the air for him to either take in the air or on the ground, or to get him away from something he does not need to be near such as someone's back yard etc. He will come instantly to the lure when it is shown

I have seen display birds trained to the lure (a small lure not a bunny lure). They would have the hawk make a pass or two and then throw it 30ft or so in the air and the harris would catch it. It's not much compared to a barbary or lanner, but still kinda cool to see. As far as falconry goes I think most guys in my area are chasing rabbits so they use a bunny lure.

I know the use of lures with HH in the way Weasel said, but never saw it using like it was a falcon. I lure fly 4 falcons and it's hard to imagine a HH doing the same... LOL
My job on that project is to write about the HH and their use on falconry... Anyone knows any good places to research about that. Specially their use in the US...

It may help to get in touch with a guy named Harry McElroy. He is on the Hawk-L list server. An e-mail based falconry chat group. Harry is in the process of writing a book on hawking Harris's specificly on desert quail.

She will respond instantly to it and wll catch it in the air on on the ground but i can nevr get a pass out of her. But i really don't believe that they are built for it with there broard wings. But Good luck though! Thanks

I have to agree with that. My Harris will come to the ground on one pass and then try to run after it. He will try to fly up to it, but will not do "fly bys".

I have seen it done by the bird show guys in san diego california. I have no personal experience with harris hawks but they do come back for another pass, you can bet your ass.
