I took my son to wrestling practice this morning and on the way there was a young red tail hawk right in the middle of the road eating a crow. I stopped and got out and got within 4 feet of it and decided to run home and grab the camera. When I got back it was still in the middle of the road eating, when I stepped out to take the pic it flew down the street with the crow so I went around the block and got this pic. It was right by the sidewalk with another young hawk 10 feet above it in a tree waiting for left overs. Pretty cool!

Great picture! It's a first year coopers hawk though. Looks like a nice size female and with quite a stout heart to take on a crow. Thanks for posting the pic. I love coops.

Wow, I thought the colors looked a little off for a red tail but I just figured it was a young one. Thanks for letting me know that, they seem to hang out around an old church I'm not sure if they are nesting in it some place but I see them there pretty often.

Most likely the old church is full of roosting prey birds like starlings and pigeons. If all the hawks are young birds, it's probably siblings that haven't moved on yet. I don't know about trapping a bird this late though. I've read they just don't tame down. September birds on the other hand I know are wonderful to train.
