I have used the same. I now use Bamboo cut at about 5' and taped inbetween each joint to prevent spliting.

I use/loose three or four hunting sticks every season (I think my huntingbuddies get most of them) I like to use green ash, it grows like crazy on my land and a two year old sappling is just the right size for my hands.

Too easy to hit the bird instead and it would get tangled in every weed out there.....I'd give a whip a big thumbs down.....A stick allows you to stab as well as beat the brush.

I'm not seeing how it could hit the bird unless you're just sling it around like a mad man. Could you please give an example?

When I was stabbing a brush pile sometimes my bird would be on the ground right there in the middle of everything to see what was going on.

I don't see how a whip could be used at all, are you talking like the leather bull whip type? Have you ever been out hunting with a bird? A sturdy staff or stave is the best way to go, with it you can: 1. Beat down briers 2. Hold snakes down while you get your bird free 3. Cross fences without damaging them our yourself 4. Poke squirrels that have gone down holes in the ground 5. Life trash, tin, tires and debris that rabbits hide under 6. Poke squirrel nests, whack squirrels coming down trees 7. Whack your hunting buddies for GP 8. Wrangle cactus piles, pipes and brush piles 9. Poke through fence lines, brush lines and debris piles 10. Make noise beating trees to scare little fury animals so they will run away and escape "you"
