Jondarp Thanks for the site post , always geting questions from new falconers , this should help !! No problem. By the way, I see that you are from Arkansas. Do you know Rusty Scarborough? I met him at the NAFA meet in 2003 and he sends me the Arkansas club news for the Hawk Chalk. Seems like a good guy.

HEEE-HAAAAW!!!! Just got off the phone with Parks and Wildlife........ I passed my test! They couldn't remember my final score, but it was somewhere in the eighties (not that it matters). One step closer. Now I just need to get my chamber up, and I'll be set. ;D

I studied the California Hawkiing Club Apprentice manual and read a few books from the Library. I read all the books my sponsor had and recommended. Then I talked with other Apprentices and borrowed a few of thier books. I read thru the State (Utah) manual several times.
I just found out yesterday that I passed the exam.
Utah state's test is supposed to be difficult. If I were to give any advice, I would make sure to read every question on the test fully before answering it. The Utah test has alot of multiple choice, some T/F questions, and even about 10 fill in the blanks. Some of the T/F questions were mostly true with one small thing about them that was incorrect, so read the questions.
The State Central office grades the test so you have to wait a while for the results. I called them and left a VM. They returned the call and left me a VM that I had passed. I though that was courteous.
It's exciting getting started because there is so much to learn. Next I'll be making equipment and mews, then inspection.
Good luck studying for the test Also, The folks on this board are always willing to answer questions.

Bob, You made a very good point about the test. It is VERY important to read each question through as they are similar to questions you may have seen before, with one minor detail changed to make it wrong. I saw several on the test that where simply reworded versions of what was in the study guide. Cheers, Weasel

Well, I found I passed the Utah test with a 90. The DWR person asked me what I did to study for the exam and I told her I read a few books and one was the California Hawking Club's Apprentice Study Guidel. Not bad for cramming for 2 weeks or so. Further up this post there was mention of a question about a pipe and smoking. I read a Falconry book last week that talked about manning birds and keeping them in the dark at first. They mentioned that smoking a pipe around the bird would help to get the bird used to you being around. I can't imagine that the nicotine and 20+ other poisons would do the hawk any good though so I don't reccommend it. Most of us probably reak enough for a bird's senses to let the bird know we are present.

Just finished taking the test. I feel like I did ok. There were a few questions that threw me off. Like- Your RT sprains a wing. You should- a. keep it quiet(?) until it heals. b. fly it hard until it heals. c. keep it socked until it heals. d. kill it.
the answer is................c?

a. is the correct answer. A bird is restricted from doing too many normal activities such as casting, sliceing, eating and breathing properly. Usually we only sock birds for trapping and medical issues that require the birds to be immobilized. Putting the bird in a dark quiet place has the same effect as hooding a bird as they tend to sit calmly when the visual stimulus is removed thus allowing them to heal. Cheers, Weasel
