You know I was wondering that myself....The nearest place I can get leather is an hour and a half away. I've experimented with different leathers...i.e. purses old jackets scrap leather packets from farm stores, they all seem to be kind of stretchy for jesses. I did make a sweet hood out of one of my wifes old purses. Had some nice designs on one of the pockets, kind of ivy flowery thing, put one design on each side of the hood, looked really sharp when it was done, not sure if it would be functional since I don't have my hawk yet to be a guinea pig but it sure looked good.

The best leather for strong, durable and safe jesses I 've found is Kangaroo Leather. Roo leather is not cheap but its probably one of the strongest out there and I use it for all my leather needs, anklets, jesses, bell bewits, glove leashes, etc. I don't have a reliable place to point you to get it...seems a recent drought in Austraila has led to a shortage and some steeper prices but keep your eye open on some of the Falconry websites that sell some of the better equipment.

For my field jesses, I just use plain old cow hide leather as it is plenty strong enough to do that job. I don't use it for perching out as it will seperate after a few bates against it. Lee is correct though, Kangaroo is the strongest leather you can use that still remains pliable and thin.

The raptors nest web site has some roo hydes for sale at to bad a price. Eighty five dollars for a hole hide that is in great shape. That price includes shipping.

I use mostly Roo, for every thing for the bird, but I've found some cheap priced jackets and purses at Goodwill and Salvation Army stores to practice and make patterns with, just be selective in the weight on leather at these places. just my two cents. wes
