Nope not at all. Mine does not need one at all, I could get away with not hooding him ever, but I do. He is hooded when ever he is outside the mews, except for hunting of course. Its just a little somthing I like incase our good friend Murphy comes knocking. Total iliminates unexpected bates, makes transport easyer, and nothing will scare the bird when on the fist or perch. Its just a great tool to have up your sleave, and it great training for future birds.

Jay, you hit the nail on the head with that one...It is not an absolutely needed item, but it sure is a good piece of mind. I hood all my birds.

How many of you make your own hoods? I read somewhere that many sponsers will insist their apprentice know how to make a hood. Me personally I am very skilled with my hands when it comes to carpentry, mechanics, electronics, and building models, but tailoring; forget it. Trying to imagine a 3D object in a 2D layout confuses me.

I think that you will find most people learn that after the fact. It is truely an art.

My sponsor insists that I learn how to make all of my own equipment. Later on, I can buy equipment if I want to. He just wants me to know HOW to make it. It's a part of falconry. So far I've made one hood, tiercel RT size. Now I'm working on a tiercel Harris sized hood.

I agree with making your own equipment, but a hood is a whole different matter.
Did you make your own gaunt as well?

That's next. It won't be an entire gauntlet, it's called an over-glove. It's kind of like a thick leather sleeve that fits over a welders glove. My sponsor has been using his for over a decade. At the end of the season, he just throws away the welders glove and pops a new one in.

My point was that many of us have to buy something first and make another one second. The only two things I plan on buying are a hood and a gaunt. Everything else I "hope" to make.
I would love to be able to make my own glove and hood....One day I will but for now I have to buy one or not have one at all.

Dodes is lucky. He is learning from someone who is experienced in doing these things. I wouldn't dare try to use a hood that I made on my first bird.....I would of traumatized the poor thing.

That is exactly what I mean....If there was someone who was willing to be patient with me and teach me the art I would love to learn it but alas all I have are you and some guy named Keith.... ;D

like Gary Brewer says there are thousands of reasons to hood your bird and zero reasons why not to hood!

The reason I ask is, beacause I read that a hood has to be tailored made to the bird. One can buy a hood for a female RT and find it doesn't fit the RT you have.
