I think the time frame depends most on you. Are you ready to take the test? If so you could do it this year. If not it depends on how far off from that point you are. Does your state group have an apprentice coordinator? This is the person who's job it is to help out the newbies hook up with other falconers and find potential sponsors. That could also be a sticky issue as some people will not sponsor someone unless they have gone a few hunts and shown at least SOME level of commitment. Does your state require you to have a sponsor? If not and you ARE ready take the test. If you pass it will be 10 times easier to find a sponsor. Don't build anything until you have a sponsor as they will usually want to have a lot of input on your facilities. Once you pass the test it is all downhill. So yes it is doable if you are ready right now to take the test. Remember you don't HAVE to trap a bird the first day of trapping season. Be patient and it will all work out. Just listen and BE PAITENT! It has taken me 3 season to find a sponsor I am comfortable with and get all my duckies lined up. The longer you are around this the better you can be........

Well it sounds like your ready. I know at least in this area that some have to really prove themselves first before people will sponsor them. Be persistent. If not they may think that you don't have enough drive to continue on. Take Cato for example, he spent the better part of this last season hanging around different falconers, hunts, parties, summer picnic, etc and this past weekend one of the local master falconers just up and offered to sponsor him. She had seen him at different functiond and became to know that he was not going away any time soon.

I was in the same boat are in when i was looking for a sponsor. ... I couldnt get a good response from my local falocners so i decided to venture else where. I finally found a sponsor that was about 2 hours away. It sucked driving that far but i finally got one. ...the picnic is the best place to start.. Have your test out of the way befor you ask anyone to sponsor you.. it shows you are serious.....If the picnic doesnt work , Call your DNR office and ask for a list of falconers in your state and go from there. Make phone calls and ask them if they will help you.( AGAIN HAVE YOUR TEST DONE FIRST.... )... It is best to have a sponsor close.. but sometimes people just want to keep the sport for to themsleves.

I would love to learn anyrhing but in Portugal we only have 1 association that does only one course a year... ther isnt many ways to find people that i can go and hunt with... probably spain would be better to find any one right? its just "next door" to Portugal.
All the best, Francisco

Spain has some fantastic falconry. I heard they have one of the best international meets anywhere and the sky trials make ours look like nothing.....from what I hear anyway....

I took my test and passed, now I just need to find a sponsor. I will most likely be keeping my bird at my uncles place twenty minutes away from here. My uncle has kept parrots in the past and knows about some things to look for in case the bird starts acting funny or anything. I'd make sure to be out there every day and work with my bird, but the Apprentice Chairman of the California Hawking Club for the area of California south of Fresno said that future sponsors might not take me as an apprentice because I am keeping my hawk at my uncles. I understand this and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me.

There is no way to house the bird with you?

not at the present time. The home owners association won't allow it.

Wont allow the bird or a building? What exactly does it say that makes you say that?

Both, probably. I live in a gated community, and even if I could build my mews at this house the minimum size mews for a RT would take up my whole back yard.
