Ask any questions related to getting started here, no matter how basic. Questions such as "how do I find a sponsor", " How do I get a bird?", etc, etc. Weasel

Hello,
Well I am just relocating to Southern California and am interested in finding a falconer to allow me to spend some time with them. I am at the pre-apprentice stage...having read alot of material as well as spending time with a couple of falconers from Ohio and New York. Would appreciate any leads that this forum can give me. I am located in the Palm Springs area. Thanks for the Help.

My Goodness! You get around don't you? Last I heard Cali's got the highest number of falconers than any other state, you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding someone. Join the CHC. I'm sure someone will step real soon.

Thanks, I hope so.....Joining CHC is a great idea....especially since this seems to be the place I am going to settle down in....I've been putting off taking the test until I was sure California is the place to be.

We're busy studying.
I just found out that in Texas have to have my sponsor lined up BEFORE I can take the test.
Looks like I need to mix in some brush beating with the flashcards.

If you need a sponsor and your in TX you should not have a problem. Are you a THA member? Roger Crandall is the apprentice coordinator for THA and he can point you in the right direction.

Hey Frootdog. Yes I am a THA member. I’ve sent Mr. Crandall an email, so hopefully he can point me toward a couple of potential sponsors.
If you know of anyone around Huntsville, let me know.

I'm not terribly familiar with that area. I would think Houston would be your best bet, but I'm not sure. You might also try the southern director...but I'm sure he'll point you back to Roger.

I have been reading a lot of different books. It seems like most are from Britain. Most of the time when the question is brought up about the time commitment for falconry, one of the issues is spending flying time. I am confused about how often you fly your bird once the season is here. I am under the impression by some it is an every day thing, some its at least once a week. Which is it.

It is as much as possible. If your like most falconers and work for a living, you will more than likely end up hunting about 3-4 times a week. I would hunt every day, but I simply don't have time to do so. Some people like Wildchild on this list are in the position to hunt every day if they want to. Weekend warriors do not work out very well as falconers as they need to be exercised regularly.

Ok, I have so stupid questions to ask that I will ask anyway. I live in Maine as ya'll know ad it is July 19 or something. anyway, I am very interested in starting an apprenticeship this year if I can grt a good sponsor etc. Basicly, I know two falconers near me and they work alot oin the summer. They keep saying, "gotta have you over soon and have a talk about falconry." well this is cool and great but, when? They are busy all the time and i think i make it clear I am interested and just waiting on them to picka good time. THe annual club picnic is August 13, By then will it be to late for me to start an apprenticeship and be trapping and training a bird this fall? ERgh, anyway, If anyone has a freakin clue let me know about the time frames I can expect IE taking tests waiting for paperwork etc. Thank you!

I think the time frame depends most on you. Are you ready to take the test? If so you could do it this year. If not it depends on how far off from that point you are. Does your state group have an apprentice coordinator? This is the person who's job it is to help out the newbies hook up with other falconers and find potential sponsors. That could also be a sticky issue as some people will not sponsor someone unless they have gone a few hunts and shown at least SOME level of commitment. Does your state require you to have a sponsor? If not and you ARE ready take the test. If you pass it will be 10 times easier to find a sponsor. Don't build anything until you have a sponsor as they will usually want to have a lot of input on your facilities. Once you pass the test it is all downhill. So yes it is doable if you are ready right now to take the test. Remember you don't HAVE to trap a bird the first day of trapping season. Be patient and it will all work out.
