Man, not to be mean....but I think you are S out of luck. It is going to be very hard to locate someone who will overlook that.

Well I'll keep looking. Maybe I'll just have to wait until we move to a house with a bigger yard.

I desperately want to start the process of apprenticeship, though I have a few barriers to look past. I'm planning to move to Maryland next Summer, so I'm not sure how to proceed. I'm not sure how a long distance apprenticeship would work or if it would be a horrid idea. Would I have to start the apprenticeship over again? Find a new sponsor? Are there such things as portable mews? Should I just wait until I'm there to do all this? I really don't want to wait, but those poor underage kids that want so badly to pursue falconry have to, so I guess I could. And really, I don't want to do this improperly. I want to give myself and my sponsor and mostly my bird the best chances for success. So ... Whether I wait until I move to MD to pursue an apprenticeship or go ahead here in WV, I would love to in the least go out and "help" with hunts and just be NEAR some birds. <cough> and falconers of course! I'm waiting on my packet to see just how many falconers there are in WV. I've contacted the Ohio Falconry Association and have applied for associate membership there. I was hoping there will be someone who won't mind me hanging out on a hunt(s). The fellow from the OFA mentioned that " trained falconry hawks are usually familiar only with their falconer, and when unknown persons accompany the falconer and the hawk into the field, the hawk's hunting and falconry behaviors can be compromised. If startled, the bird can simply fly away." That's a bummer... I had not considered this. I certainly wouldn't want to compromise anyone's bird. I understand that the presence of another might not help the success of a hunt though. So I guess I need some advice as to whether I should keep studying and wait until I get to Maryland to start up the process, should I not worry so much about a long distance sponsorship if I do find someone that I work well with and that agrees to sponsor me. Or in the least as I said, would hunting with someone at some point between now and then be more of a nuisance for the falconer than a help to me. wow I ramble.. thanks in advance for any advice good hunting all Solstice

Well, At what point in the year are you planning to move to MD? If you tried to get into an apprenticship now, you wouldn't really have time to trap a bird this season anyway as it ends in most states December 31st for trapping. As for transfering the apprenticship, no problems there. All you need to do is find a new sponser to transfer to. There are many types of mews out there and some that have become very popular as of late are the Rubbermaid style sheds as they can quite easily be modified into a mews. See if you can get in touch with some of the officers of the local falconers club(assuming there is one in WV) they may be able to point you in the right direction to find a falconer you can go hunting with. Cheers, Weasel

Soltice,
First let me say that I am from Ohio. I would say wait until you get to Maryland to start building large items like mews and such. You will be reading and going out with other falconers .As far as spooking the birds there are some like that but I would say not most. Just get in touch with some people and ask

Two things.........
1. I would wait to get a bird. Like Wease says you really wont be able to trap until next year anyway.
2. The only time I have ever been turned down to go hawking was with Falconers who were afraid to show their honey hole if you will. Most of the guys I know love company as long as you are respectfull and and of sound moral character.

Well, I have good news. The fellow from the OFA wrote me back saying that his first reply to my inquiry was a standard boilerplate text for requests from people who want to see "falconry." He went on to encourage me to join the OFA, which I am, and to meet some people out there and see if they will take me along hunting. He said that I had missed the Early October annual meeting (bummer). Advised me to get the Beebe book, which I have as well as Glasier and Perry-Jones. I think waiting until MD for all the official work is probably best. I need to take a hunting class, and then I can get a license to tag along with whomever might have me.... I checked out your link to the WV falconers club, but that was sort of a dead end. The email link was broken, there were some older copies of license apps, and some pictures. too bad. I have done google searches as well, but no good. I'll just have to wait until I get my packet to find out contact information on falconers in WV. Thanks for the supportive comments. I appreciate it. I'm planning to move to MD in June, so I'll just take in as much as I can in the meantime. Actually thinking about making some of those Dacron leashes and my jesses etc. I've ordered Kangaroo leather already. I loved all of the mews pictured on your site. I spent a good part of the day yesterday looking at all you have had to say about equipment. Thanks for the terrific info.
